Devon Senior Championships at Libbaton Golf Club

Rupert Crofts enjoyed a memorable day at Libbaton Golf Club, claiming two trophies and the title of player of the day at the Devon Senior Men’s Stableford Championship.

After a long, hot summer had left many courses across the county struggling for water, the lush green fairways at Libbaton provided a welcome sight for Devon’s golfers.

There was plenty at stake, with three trophies available in the senior championship. The Veterans’ Challenge Cup was awarded for the best nett Stableford score, the Bert Hudson Trophy for the best scratch Stableford score, while the Pensioners’ Plate went to the best nett score from a player aged 65 or over.

Despite the excellent condition of the course, scoring proved more difficult than anticipated, with anything above 30 points looking a useful return.

The day’s outstanding performance came from Honiton’s Rupert Crofts (PH 20), who carded an impressive 37 points to win the Veterans’ Challenge Cup and Pensioners’ Plate, as well as taking the overall player-of-the-day honours.

Saunton’s Mark Snape (PH -1) finished runner-up on 34 points, while Libbaton’s own Ian Longhurst (PH 9) took third place on countback with 33.

Snape gained some consolation by taking the Bert Hudson Trophy for the best scratch score, producing an excellent 35 points. Warren’s Tim Aggett was runner-up with 31, with Honiton’s Andy Clark third on 30.

The event also provided an opportunity to thank the many people at Libbaton who helped make the championship such a success.

Special praise went to starter Jeff, the Libbaton members who spent hours on the course ball spotting, and the friendly clubhouse team. A particular mention also went to Bev in the office, whose hard work helped Competition Manager Wendy keep the event running smoothly.

It proved a highly enjoyable championship at a welcoming and impressively green Libbaton — a timely reminder that Devon’s golf courses can still produce the goods after a challenging summer.
