Braunton teenager strikes gold at World Karate Championships
Braunton youngster enjoys global karate success
Braunton teenager Mason Keatley has enjoyed an outstanding international success after winning seven medals while representing England at the ICO World Championships in France.
Fourteen-year-old Mason, who is a Year 9 student at Braunton Academy and lives with his family on Exeter Road, Braunton, was selected to represent England at the International Combat Organisation (ICO) World Championships, held in Thonon-les-Bains, France, from October 14 to 18.
Mason's selection followed a squad training session in Redditch earlier this year, led by Dave Treadwell, President of the ICO for England, who recognised Mason's ability and gave him the opportunity to compete on the international stage.
Having trained with Union Karate Do for the past five and a half years, Mason's dedication and commitment to the sport have certainly paid off.
Competing in six categories at the prestigious championships, Mason delivered an incredible performance, bringing home an impressive haul of seven medals – two gold, two silver and three bronze.
Mason travelled to France with his family, including his parents and four children, who were there to support him throughout the competition.
His family said they were incredibly proud of his achievements, praising his dedication and the hard work he has put into reaching this level.
They also paid tribute to his coaches, Aaron and Gary Blake of Union Karate Do, describing them as "the most amazing senseis" and thanking them for their continued support, encouragement and guidance throughout Mason's karate journey.
For Mason, the championships were an unforgettable experience, not only giving him the chance to represent his country but also to compete against talented martial artists from around the world.
With seven medals to his name and an international championship experience under his belt, the young Braunton karate star has plenty to celebrate.
A fantastic achievement for Mason, his family, Union Karate Do and the Braunton community!
