A special place in Holsworthy has opened its doors to mark its 10th anniversary and show the community the vital work it does for North Devon Hospice patients.
The Longhouse has held a special evening of celebration and awareness with all welcome to go along and find out more about the care and support provided for local people facing a life-limiting illness.
The facility opened in September 2015 to bring North Devon Hospice care and services closer to those living in some of the more rural and remote areas of North Devon.

It has made support accessible to those in Holsworthy and the surrounding areas who would otherwise face long and potentially stressful journeys to Barnstaple on a regular basis.

In those 10 years, more than 15,000 sessions of care have been provided to local people. This includes specialist nurse consultations, relaxing complementary therapies, hair and wig clinics, counselling, group therapies, creative sessions and much more.
Stephen Roberts, hospice chief executive, said: “Ten years ago, we knew that people in Holsworthy and the surrounding areas were struggling to access the care they needed.
“The Longhouse is a testament to the amazing support of the local community, who helped to raise funds to build the facility, and then helped to fund the ongoing care for thousands of people over the last ten years.
“When people come to us, they can feel scared, alone or in pain. With the support available from The Longhouse, our patients and their loved ones can feel like they’re able to make the most of every precious day. They’ll realise they’re not alone in what they’re facing and that North Devon Hospice will be with them every step of the way.”
Heidi Orton, from North Devon Hospice’s fundraising team, said: “The evening was a fantastic way to showcase how vital community support is, and to show the real impact their fundraising has for local patients and families.”
A Holsworthy resident, who came along out of curiosity, admitted she had always wondered what went on behind the doors of The Longhouse. She said: “It’s a beautiful building, but I never realised how much of an impact it has on our community. It’s brilliant to know this kind of care is available so close to home.”

Guests enjoyed guided tours of the building, talks from the Supportive Care team, and fittingly for a birthday celebration, plenty of cake.
Ten years on, The Longhouse remains an essential part of life in Holsworthy and beyond, a place that continues to bring vital care, comfort and connection to the heart of the community.
