While classes were out for the summer, volunteers have been busy at East-the-Water Primary School in Bideford clearing overgrown areas and revamping the school’s BMX track.

It continues a four-year tradition of volunteers from SUEZ recycling and recovery UK who have worked at the school during the holidays to improve the grounds.

This year, a team from the Bideford and Seven Brethren Recycling Centres, working alongside Pete and Vicky Knight from G&P Services, cleared a whole overgrown forest section of the grounds to improve the existing BMX cycle track.

Fences were painted and the grounds around the track landscaped to create an exciting new area which aims to provide students with a safe and fun space for physical activity as they return to school after the summer holidays.

SUEZ volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clear the designated areas of debris and growth and then with the help of colleagues, collected and transported the green waste to a local composting facility run by Coastal Waste, which accepted the waste free of charge.

Robbie Andrews, area supervisor for SUEZ, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with East-the-Water Primary school and work on projects that make a real difference to the local community.

“The BMX bike track is a fantastic way to encourage children to engage in outdoor activities and develop their cycling skills. Our team is proud to contribute to the well-being of the children.”

Headteacher Adam Bukeridge added: “Nurturing active lifestyles amongst children is crucial for their development, and this project exemplifies how working with our local community can help benefit the school and its students.

“I want to say a huge thank you to the team of volunteers from SUEZ, the work they have done is invaluable.”
