Residents of Barnstaple are invited to join a community tree-planting event at Rock Park in the town on Saturday, March 14.

The Barnstaple Town Council event will be combined with a litter pick and see 240 saplings supplied by the Woodland Trust planted around the park grounds.

It will run from 10.30am to 12noon and anyone who would like to take part is invited to just turn up and meet opposite the skate park at 10.30.

Equipment will be provided if needed but participants are invited to bring their own wellies, gloves and spades if possible.

The community event is taking place on Mothering Sunday weekend and aims to celebrate not only mothers, but also fathers, friends, mentors and chosen family.

Esther Gittoes, Barnstaple Town Council communications officer, said: “Mother’s Day isn’t the same for everyone. We’re planting trees to honour the people who nurture us, mother nature included.”

Estates manager Wayne Palmer added: “We’re delighted to have received these tree donations from the Woodland Trust.

“Planting these saplings and picking up litter will help preserve Rock Park and improve our town’s biodiversity.”
