The Bluebirds beloved by Gordon Lawson
Ilfracombe Town Football Club is mourning the loss of a true club legend following the sad passing of Gordon Lawson, a genuine hero of Marlborough Park.
The club said: “Gordon started his football career with Aylesbury but a few of their players made the move to a team not so far away, where a certain Ron Holman was a player and that is when the football dynasty began with Gordon and Ron.
“They made the move to Ilfracombe in 1974, when Tony Alcock called one night to collect Gordon’s car insurance. The business was soon done but they got talking about football, and over an hour later, the invite was made to come and see Combe at South Molton.
“Gordon remained loyal to Combe throughout his playing career, although being a very good player, with higher league sides making their approaches, nothing was going to have him leave his Combe.
“After his playing career, Combe really did benefit from the whole family being involved. Ron, Sue, Gordon and Jean had many roles at the club, coaching and managing the teams and putting on so many events at the ground.
“What a truly remarkable involvement he had, and with Jean and Sue always supporting the club. We have been very fortunate to have known Gordon and his loss will remembered for many years at our club.”
A Bluebird through and through.
