Conor Mcintosh and trainer Richard Grigg
Bideford boxer Conor Mcintosh is the new Super Featherweight Celtic Champion. Mcintosh was the challenger for Nathan Howells’ title in a bout shown live on BBC TV in Cardiff.
Mcintosh got off to a fantastic start, landing back hands cleanly and buzzing Howells several times in the first couple of rounds. Howells had his most successful in round three as he got inside and tried to make a fight of it.
Mcintosh regrouped in round four and five, showing fast hands and footwork and putting on a boxing master class. The finish came in round six as Howells crashed to the floor from a straight left cross. He beat the count and got to his feet but he wasn’t recovered.
Mcintosh stepped in with a big left uppercut, knocking Howells out and earning his shot now at his dream British Title.
Mcintosh said: “AND THE NEW Celtic Champion & Mandatory Challenger for the British Title! Huge thank you to everyone who came out to support, the energy was unreal. Massive respect to Nathan Howells and his team, a true warrior.”
Trainer Richard Grigg added: “What a night for Conor Mcintosh, winning the Celtic Super Featherweight Title in style and now gets his shot at the British Title. This was his dream when he turned pro four years ago and it’s been some journey to get here.
“Mcintosh has done it the hard way, working a full time job, winning on the road and with no big promotor behind him. What he has achieved is special, becoming Welsh and Celtic Champion.
“He deserves everything he has achieved, he is a top man inside and outside the ring and a fine example of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication. I’m proud to be in his corner and to have played a small part in his career.”
