Good Friday results for Exeter City, Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United

In a game that carried far more significance for their visitors, Exeter City played out a tepid 0-0 draw with Burton Albion in horrid conditions for the lunchtime fixture on Good Friday.

The point was enough to take the Brewers out of the bottom four and officially confirmed the relegation of Shrewsbury Town, while the Grecians had the luxury of knowing the pressure is off ahead of a well-earned summer break.

Caleb Watts was denied an opener for City by a superb goalline clearance before Burton goalkeeper Max Crocombe produced a top save to thwart Jack McMillan. Reece Cole also went close with a decent effort early in the second half.

Burton, while unable to pose much of an attacking threat, were happy to play out for a point in the wind and rain. City did get the ball in the net through Andrew Oluwabori two minutes from time but an offside flag immediately halted home celebrations.

A heartbreaking end at Middlesbrough condemned Plymouth Argyle to a potentially fatal 2-1 loss in the Sky Bet Championship.

After falling behind to a goal from former Pilgrim Finn Azaz, Argyle quickly levelled through Mustapha Bundu and soaked up loads of pressure in a determined second-half display.

The Greens were just a few minutes from earning a crucial point when captain Joe Edwards misplaced a challenge in the box, the referee pointed to the spot and Tommy Conway delivered the winner for Boro.

To make matters worse, Edwards was shown a red card and will now miss the visit from Coventry City on Easter Monday, a game Argyle simply must win.

In the National League South, a sweet goal from former Exeter City midfielder Matt Jay earned Torquay United a massive 1-0 victory at leaders Truro City. The Gulls have two games left to play and sit just one point away from automatic promotion.
