Appledore shipyard will be taking on 20 new apprentices for 2026 as the yard ramps up work on major naval contracts.

The announcement was made by yard owner Navantia UK today (Monday, March 2), with successful applicants set to start their new employment in August or September this year.

The intake supports Navantia UK’s long-term goal of building a skilled workforce in shipbuilding and engineering across the UK.

Apprentices at Appledore will have the opportunity to earn while they learn, gaining hands-on experience in a wide range of roles.

Both Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships are available, with applications open today.

Among the areas covered will be welding, pipe fitting, fabrication, computer aided design, mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing.

The application process will include a tour of the yard at the end of March and interviews from early to mid April.

Appledore has already welcomed a growing number of apprentices in recent years and continues to expand as part of Navantia UK’s wider £115million investment programme across its UK facilities.

This has included installation of robotic plasma cutting systems, upgraded lifting cranes, refurbished workshops and enhanced quality control processes.

Appledore is playing an active role in the Fleet Solid Support (FSS) programme for the Royal Navy, including work on the FSS barge which will transport ship blocks between UK yards and recently marked a steel cutting milestone on site.

The three Fleet Solid Support ships, each 216 metres long, will provide vital supplies such as food, ammunition and equipment to Royal Navy warships at sea.

Helen McTokell, apprenticeship and training manager at Navantia UK, said: “Appledore is a centre of excellence for shipbuilding in the South West and we are looking to recruit the brightest and most motivated apprentices from Devon and beyond.

”Apprentices bring new energy and skills to the yard, helping us to grow our capabilities while opening doors to exciting careers in shipbuilding and engineering.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to learn on the job and be part of a highly skilled workforce that is building the ships of the future.”

Liam Harris, an apprentice welder at Appledore, said: “I wanted a career where I could work with my hands and learn technical skills.

“The apprenticeship at Appledore gives me real experience on important projects while studying for recognised qualifications. I’m excited to develop my skills and contribute to the team.”

Apprentice fabricator Sophie Patel added: “An apprenticeship lets me gain practical skills in shipbuilding while earning, which is ideal.

“I am learning from experienced colleagues and getting involved in projects that matter. It’s a great way to start a career in engineering with strong prospects for the future.”
