North Devon creative shortlisted for major ‘innovation’ award

Sarah Lee-Pettifer, known as Mrs Animation, whose work spans visual art and local theatre, is nominated for the 2026 Innovation Award.

A North Devon artist and playwright has been named as a finalist for a prestigious cultural award following a string of successful theatrical productions in the region.

Sarah Lee-Pettifer, known professionally as Mrs Animation, is a finalist for the Innovation Flourishing Culture Award 2026. The nomination recognises her contribution to the local landscape through immersive art and theatre.

The news comes on the heels of her recent comedy musical, Essex to Barny, which saw success at The Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple.

'The madness along the way'

Speaking on her nomination, Sarah Lee-Pettifer said she was "incredibly honoured" to be recognised by the judging panel.

"Innovation means taking risks, building community, and believing that big ideas can start in North Devon," she said.

"This nomination isn’t just about me, it’s about everyone who has supported the shows, the art, and the madness along the way."

A "satirical" summer ahead

The artist is currently preparing for her next project, GAY The Musical. The production is a satirical look at the life of the Barnstaple-born 18th-century playwright John Gay, best known for The Beggar's Opera.

The musical is set to premiere at the Fringe Festival this June. Beyond the stage, Mrs Animation is also developing major exhibition projects and exploring touring opportunities for her previous work.

The Flourishing Culture Awards, supported by North Devon and Torridge District Councils, aim to highlight individuals and organisations that enrich community life.

The awards cover 11 categories, including:

  • Performing Arts
  • Heritage
  • Rural Community Engagement
  • Innovation

A spokesperson for the awards said the event is about highlighting those who have made a "positive impact" on their community, regardless of traditional measures of success.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony held at the Barnstaple Hotel on 13 March, where shortlisted nominees from across the district will gather to celebrate the region's "cultural trailblazers."
