Primary school children in North Devon have seen their artwork turned into professional road signs to help improve safety near their school.

More than 200 pupils from Ilfracombe CofE Junior School took part in a competition to design posters reminding drivers to slow down.

The initiative, organised by local developer Devonshire Homes, focused on the area around the Mariner's Haven site on Old Barnstaple Road.

The winning designs, created by Year 4 pupil Lili and Year 5 pupil Madi, feature a bus slowing down for children and a "stop, look, listen, think" message.

'Real difference'

The signs have now been installed across both the school grounds and the new housing development.

Jody Le Bredonchel, Head Teacher at Ilfracombe CofE Junior School, said the project was a “practical way to reinforce important road safety messages” for the pupils.

Jane Pearce, from Devonshire Homes, added that the artwork would help raise awareness of safe speeds in an area “used by families every day.”

As part of the initiative, the winning pupils received toy shop vouchers, while the school was given a £100 donation toward supplies.
