A rescue dog has found his “forever home” just in time for Valentine’s Day, after spending more than three months waiting to be adopted.

Romeo, a four-year-old Chow Chow crossbreed, spent 106 days at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe before being taken in by the Lloyd-Judd family from Plympton in Plymouth.

Despite his affectionate personality and striking looks, Romeo had remained at the rehoming centre while waiting for the right family to come along.

During his wait, Romeo lived in a foster home, where volunteers provided a more relaxed environment than the kennels.

While in foster care, he enjoyed trips to pubs and cafés, car journeys, and meeting new people, giving him the chance to show off his fun-loving and sociable nature.

The family who eventually adopted him said they were immediately taken with Romeo after seeing his profile online. Catherine Lloyd-Judd said: “We were looking for a dog full of character, and that’s Romeo! When we came to meet him, we just found him so lovable, and we knew straight away that he was the dog for us.”

Romeo’s new home is close to a playing field for daily walks, with easy access to Dartmoor and the beaches of South Devon, offering plenty of opportunities for adventure. Catherine added that Romeo has settled in well, exploring every corner of his garden and enjoying plenty of cuddles.

“We could tell he was understandably a little unsettled at first, but he’s having lots of cuddles, and I don’t think it will take him long to feel at home. Romeo has made our family complete again.”

Elise Watson, manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, said Romeo’s story was a heartwarming example of the benefits of adoption.

“Romeo has been a joy to care for, and we’re absolutely delighted to see him settled with a family who adore him. He waited patiently for the right match, and the fact that his adoption was just in time for Valentine’s Day feels incredibly special. Stories like Romeo’s demonstrate just how rewarding adoption can be, for both dogs and the people who welcome them into their lives.”

While Romeo is now happily settled, Dogs Trust said there are still many dogs in need of homes.

The charity encourages potential adopters to visit its website to find out more about dogs waiting for adoption at Ilfracombe.
