What happens to business rates? Find out at free event for North Devon firms

North Devon Council is hosting a free event for local businesses this February to look at how business rates are spent and the council’s financial plans for the year ahead

Node Cowork in Barnstaple will be the venue for a free drop-in event for local business hosted by North Devon Council on February 11.

A free drop-in event is being held for businesses across North Devon to learn more about how business rates are used locally and North Devon Council’s financially plans for the coming year.

The event will take place at Node Cowork in Roundswell, Barnstaple, on Wednesday, February 11 from 5.30pm to 8pm.

Those attending will be able to speak to representatives from various partner organisations. These include Stephen Taylor‑Jones from North Devon Plus, the North Devon Council business rates team and Andreas Nest of Action Coach, who will present a newly established networking group.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view ‘Northern Devon Makes’, an interactive website designed for manufacturers and makers in the region.

Theer is no need to book, business representatives can simply turn up.

Guests are invited to arrive between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, when they can sign in, enjoy refreshments and network in the main café area.

From 6.30pm until 8pm, the council’s director of resources Jon Triggs will deliver a presentation outlining the council’s proposed 2026-27 budget and explain how business rates are allocated and spent in the local area.

Jon Triggs said: “We are keen to share our financial plans for the coming year and to listen to the views of our local businesses. We look forward to reflecting on what’s been achieved so far.

“This is a great opportunity to engage with other local business owners and we hope to see you there.”
