Ilfracombe Academy students have been giving thought to the future at their annual Next Steps Day careers fair.

Hosted just off site at the nearby North Devon Resort, the event saw representatives from employers, colleges, training providers and universities attend to speak with students from all year groups about education, training and employment pathways.

The aim is to help students get an idea of the range of academic, vocational and work-based routes available to them when they leave school.

The school, part of the Athena Learning Trust, says Next Steps Days helps support its Careers Development Institute (CDI) framework, helping students develop skills such as self-awareness, decision-making and career planning be engaging with employers and education providers.

The Academy holds the nationally recognised Investor in Careers award and its careers programme includes employability lessons, interview skills workshops, work experience, university visits and one-to-one guidance to support students.

Headteacher Steve Rogers said: “Events like Next Steps Day give our students the chance to explore the many opportunities available to them and connect what they’re learning in school with their future plans.

“We make sure every student has the guidance and support they need to make informed choices about the next steps in their education or career.”
