People living in and around Fremington are being invited to take part in an annual meadow-management day to help encourage the return of orchids and wild flowers.
The event at Fremington Cuttings on Saturday, December 13 is being organised by North Devon Council in partnership with Home Farm Marsh Volunteers and runs from 10am to 3pm.
It will involve practical hands-on conservation, helping to manage the steep meadow banks and encourage the return of native wildflowers. No previous experience is needed, just enthusiasm and a willingness to get stuck in.

Volunteers will meet at the car park at the end of Fremington Quay before heading to the cuttings along the Tarka Trail - an area once rich in orchids. With continued careful management, the partnership hopes to restore these plants to the site and help support the wider biodiversity of the area.
Councillor Ricky Knight, North Devon Council’s lead member for climate and biodiversity, said: “Taking care of our natural spaces is something we can all be part of. This volunteer day is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the long-term restoration of the cuttings and support future orchid growth. We’d love to see as many people as possible join us for this important annual project.”

Anyone who would like to take part is advised to wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather on the day, as well as to bring a pair of strong gloves, plenty to drink and a packed lunch.
Those wishing to take part are encouraged to register by emailing the council’s parks team at parks@northdevon.gov.uk. Free parking is available at Fremington Quay.
