Yeo Valley Community Woodland in Barnstaple has received a five-star rating at this year’s South West in Bloom “Pride in Parks” ceremony, recognising its outstanding contribution to community engagement, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
The ceremony took place at RHS Rosemoor Gardens on Thursday 27 March, where judges praised the site for its cleanliness, strong volunteer network, and long-term environmental impact.
Key to the woodland’s success has been its deep-rooted community involvement. Since its inception, more than 900 local schoolchildren and over 300 volunteers have supported the planting of trees alongside park staff and contractors.
The Friends of Yeo Valley Community Woodland also meet monthly to carry out essential conservation and maintenance work.
In addition to its social value, the woodland is expected to absorb around 3,500 tonnes of CO₂ over the next 100 years, offering a crucial contribution to North Devon’s climate goals while also supporting local wildlife.
“This award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire community,” said Andrew Moulton, Parks Manager at North Devon Council.
“From the early planning stages to ongoing maintenance, so many people have contributed to making Yeo Valley Community Woodland a thriving, biodiverse space. We are really pleased to see these efforts recognised and look forward to seeing the woodland continue to flourish for generations to come.”
Interpretation signs placed at the woodland’s entrances help visitors learn more about the site’s story, as well as the plants and animals it supports.
Yeo Valley Community Woodland continues to be a popular destination for local families, schools, and nature lovers.
