The view at Baggy Point, a great place for a New Year's walk

North Devon’s coast and countryside offer some of the most rewarding winter walks in the South West, making the New Year an ideal time to get outside and explore.

Whether you prefer a cliff-top challenge or a gentle riverside stroll, the region has a route to suit every pace and fitness level.

These trails remain popular with locals and visitors throughout the colder months and provide a refreshing way to begin the year.

Baggy Point, Croyde

Perhaps the most iconic coastal walk in North Devon, Baggy Point delivers dramatic Atlantic views and a clear, well-maintained path.

Starting from the National Trust car park, the route follows the headland with sweeping views towards Saunton and Lundy.

The circular loop usually takes around an hour, with optional extensions for those who want a longer walk.

Winter winds can be strong along the cliffs, but on a calm day Baggy Point is one of the best places to take in the coastline.

Watersmeet, near Lynmouth

The riverside walk at Watersmeet offers a very different landscape.

Nestled in a deep wooded valley, the trail follows the East Lyn River through ancient oak forest and moss-covered rocks.

It’s a peaceful route, popular with walkers seeking quiet space after a busy festive season. The sound of the river is constant throughout the walk, and there are several paths of varying lengths to choose from.

Even in winter, the gorge holds onto its greenery, creating a sheltered, atmospheric route.

Heddon Valley, Parracombe

Heddon Valley provides a scenic walk through one of the National Trust’s most picturesque locations.

Starting at the Hunter’s Inn, the path gently follows the river out towards Heddon’s Mouth, where the valley opens onto the sea between steep, rugged cliffs.

The walk is straightforward and accessible for most abilities, making it a popular choice for families.

Deer and rare butterflies can sometimes be spotted along the way, and the protected woodland makes it a calmer option on windy days.

Tarka Trail, Braunton to Barnstaple

For an easy-going New Year walk, the Tarka Trail’s estuary section is ideal.

The Braunton to Barnstaple stretch is flat, accessible and traffic-free, making it suitable for walkers, cyclists, wheelchairs and pushchairs.

The route runs alongside the River Taw, offering wide water views and plenty of birdlife. It’s also a good choice during wet winter spells when some rural footpaths become muddy.

Morte Point, Mortehoe

Those wanting more of a challenge often head to Morte Point, known for its dramatic rocky landscape and exposed headland.

The circular route from Mortehoe village offers far-reaching views and a good workout on steeper sections.

The coastline here is particularly striking in winter, with waves crashing against the rocks below.

Good footwear is essential, but the scenery makes it one of the most rewarding walks in the district.

Whether the aim is to clear your head, embrace a New Year fitness routine or simply enjoy a quiet moment outdoors, these North Devon routes offer a scenic start to the year.

With warm layers and sturdy shoes, each of these walks provides a chance to take in the region’s winter beauty at your own pace.
