A ‘bold’ restructure of Shebbear College sixth form has seen the school drop to a four-day week and relax uniform rules for post-16 students.

The school has unveiled a ‘refreshed and forward-thinking vision for its sixth form, designed to offer students a modern, flexible and unique post-16 education experience’.

Shebbear College has also announced scholarship applications are now open for Year 11 students wishing to apply to attend in September 2026.

At the centre of the changes is a new four-day week, which began when the new sixth form term started last month and has proved popular.

Students are now only required to attend four ‘focused days’, with Fridays set aside as an optional day for them to undertake paid work, go on work experience placements or use it for independent study.

Those who do attend school on Fridays will still benefit from co-curricular activities and time with tutors, but the school says the flexibility allows them to ‘take greater ownership of their time and prepare for life beyond school’.

Charlie Jenkins, head at Shebbear College, said: “This is a bold step forward. We want our sixth formers to feel trusted, empowered and ready for the real world.

“The four-day week gives them the freedom to explore interests, gain experience and develop independence, while still receiving the same high-quality teaching and support.”

Alongside this, the school is also updating its sixth form dress code to reflect modern standards. Jackets and ties are no longer required and smart trainers are permitted, allowing students to feel comfortable whilst reflecting the modern workplace.

With recent excellent A-level results, Shebbear College says it offers sixth formers opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

These include the Horizons programme for careers, apprenticeships and university applications. An international Australian exchange programme, Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards and the Ten Tors challenge, plus opportunities in performing arts, sport and the chance to join a Camps International expedition.

Scholarship applications must be in by 9am on Monday, November 10.
