An internet outage that disrupted several GP surgeries across North Devon on Monday (October 20) was not connected to the widespread technical problems experienced by Amazon Web Services (AWS), NHS Devon has confirmed.
Brannam Medical Centre in Barnstaple was among those affected, leaving staff unable to take calls or access patient records for part of the day.
A spokesperson for NHS Devon Integrated Care Board (ICB) told the Gazette: “To clarify, the issue was not related to the technical issues with Amazon Web Services. Brannam Medical Centre in Barnstaple was affected by a local IT hardware issue. The practice has business continuity arrangements in place to manage these types of issues, which were enacted. We expect the practice will return to business as usual today.”

On Monday, Brannam Medical Centre had posted a message on social media informing patients of the outage, advising those needing urgent medical help to contact NHS 111 or 999 in emergencies.
By the afternoon, the practice confirmed its systems were back online and services had returned to normal.
