Villagers gathered in Berrynarbor last weekend (12 October) to mark the 20th anniversary of their community-run shop.
The store, which almost closed in 2004 when the owner retired, was saved by local residents who formed the cooperative Berrynarbor Community Enterprise (BCE).
Faced with the loss of the village’s last remaining shop, a group of determined locals came together to purchase and run the store.
Today, more than 100 villagers continue to hold shares in the shop, ensuring its place at the heart of the community.
Shop manager Karen Loftus praised the dedication of those who helped save the shop two decades ago.
“It really is the heart of our village and so important to our customers,” said shop manager Karen Loftus.
“The vision, hard work and persistence of those who set up BCE is still paying off today and we are so grateful to them.”
The shop has been a lifeline for many, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it became a crucial resource for elderly and vulnerable residents.
Today, the shop is staffed by three part-time employees, led by Karen, who work alongside a team of over 20 volunteers.
These volunteers play a vital role in keeping the shop running.
During the anniversary celebrations, a special tribute was made to the volunteers, including a presentation to five who have been involved since the shop's early days.
In 2007, the shop and Post Office relocated to its current home in a purpose-built facility near the village car park, continuing its legacy as a key part of Berrynarbor life.
