Okehampton Interchange: New station 'taking shape' one year on

Progress on the multi-million pound Okehampton Interchange station hits a major milestone one year after construction began, with the new platform, 200-space car park, and Hameldown Road bus interchange set to transform rail travel and commuter links between West Devon and Exeter by Summer 2026.

Construction of the new Okehampton Interchange station is beginning to take shape, one year after major work started on the site.

The project is designed to increase passenger numbers on the railway line between Okehampton and Exeter by providing a new strategic access point for West Devon.

Work is currently continuing on the main station platform and a 200-space car park. Once these structural elements are complete, the construction focus will shift toward the station forecourt.

The final phase of the project involves building a dedicated bus interchange on Hameldown Road, designed to allow for seamless transfers between road and rail.

Key Project Dates

The journey to this point follows several years of planning:

  • June 2024: The formal decision to proceed was made and funding was secured.
  • Early 2025: Initial groundworks and site preparation began.
  • March 2026: One year of intensive construction completed; platform and parking taking shape.
  • Summer 2026: Expected opening date for passengers.

Regional impact

The new interchange is expected to act as a "park and ride" facility for the A30 corridor, reducing traffic into Exeter city centre.

By linking the station directly to local bus routes on Hameldown Road, the project aims to make the Dartmoor Line accessible to a wider catchment area, including North Cornwall and Torridge.

The station is on track to welcome its first passengers this summer.
