Torbay roadworks: New traffic lights start today on key roads in Torquay and Paignton

Motorists in Torbay are being advised to expect delays as a number of utility and highway works continue through January 2026 and beyond, according to the latest information from Torbay Council.

Several long-running gas pipe replacement projects by Wales and West Utilities are affecting key roads in Torquay, with full closures in place until early April.

These include phased works on Steep Hill (Phase 1: Teignmouth Road to junction with Rock House Lane), Rock House Lane (Phase 2: Steep Hill to outside Five Meadows), and Brim Hill (Phase 3: Teignmouth Road to Rock House Lane), all operating all day.

Two-way temporary traffic lights remain on Teignmouth Road at the junction with Steep Hill until 2 February, while a separate three-way lights scheme on Cary Park in St Marychurch (outside Castle Court to Oakleigh Lodge) continues until 30 January.

In Paignton, gas pipe upgrades at the Dartmouth Road/Roundham Road roundabout junction are ongoing from mid-January, involving three-way lights on Dartmouth Road and one-way/full closures on Roundham Road and The Riviera until 25 January.

A full road closure is scheduled on Grange Road from 26 January to 6 March for further Wales and West Utilities works. Carriageway reconstruction on Torquay Road (between Kings Road and Higher Polsham Road) is set to begin on 26 January, lasting into early April.

Short-term schemes this week and next include:

• Two-way lights on Totnes Road outside Diggers Patch (22 January, 09:00–15:00).
• Two-way lights on Babbacombe Road (26–28 January, 18:00–07:00).
• Road closure on Stoke Road (between junctions of Yalberton Road and Long Road, 26–28 January, 09:00–15:30).
• In Brixham, two-way lights on Gillard Road at junction with Centry Road (until 13 February) and a short closure on Overgang Road (until 23 January).

Other ongoing works include full closures on Old Mill Road adjacent to Chelston Manor Hotel (until 5 February) and three-way lights on Newton Road at junction with Orchard Way (until 12 April, evenings/nights only).

Torbay Council recommends checking the interactive roadworks map on their website for real-time colour-coded impact details (red for major, amber for moderate, green for minor) and planning journeys accordingly.

Drivers should allow extra time, especially in Torquay's St Marychurch area and Paignton's town centre and harbour approaches.
