Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists across Torbay and the wider South West are being urged to take extra care after a weather warning highlighted the risk of icy patches overnight into Wednesday morning.

The warning covers the period between midnight and 10am on Wednesday, January 7, with untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths most at risk following wet conditions and a drop in temperatures overnight.

According to the Met Office, a band of rain is expected to clear southeast late today, 6 January, with clearer skies developing across much of the region overnight. This combination is likely to lead to icy surfaces, particularly in the early hours and during the Wednesday morning commute.

Devon, Torbay, Cornwall, Plymouth, Somerset, Dorset and Gloucestershire are all included in the affected areas, with forecasters warning of a risk of slips, falls and minor travel disruption.

Residents are being advised to allow extra time for journeys, especially during the morning rush, and to take care when walking or cycling. Main roads and pavements are more likely to have been treated and may be less slippery than quieter routes.

Motorists are also encouraged to check road conditions before setting off, while those using public transport should keep an eye on bus and train updates in case of delays.

The Met Office has stressed that weather warnings can change and is advising people to stay up to date with the latest local forecasts throughout the night and into Wednesday morning.

No severe weather impacts are currently expected, but even brief icy spells can cause problems during peak travel times, particularly in coastal and rural parts of the South West.
