Drivers in Plymouth are being advised to plan ahead over the Christmas and New Year period, as a number of roadworks are scheduled across the city.

The works, taking place between Monday 22 December and Saturday 10 January, include evening and overnight repairs, road closures, traffic signals and utility works.

Several schemes are being timed to avoid peak travel periods, with some planned during quieter holiday hours.

Plymouth City Council said the programme includes essential maintenance, safety improvements and utility works, many of which have been scheduled to limit disruption while people travel over the festive period.

Roadworks starting before Christmas

From Monday 22 December, evening patching works will affect Embankment Road (outbound) and Western Approach/Union Street (inbound), with bus lanes closed between 7pm and 10pm.

On Tuesday 23 December, three-way temporary traffic lights will be in place at Bampton Road’s Thurlestone Walk roundabout during the evening, while daytime street lighting works will take place at the Mudge Way North car park roundabout.

Further street lighting works are planned for St Peters Road on Wednesday 24 December, with temporary signals at the Manadon Sports Hub junction during the day.

Works continuing into the New Year

After Christmas, lane closures are planned at Marsh Mills/Leigham on Monday 29 December for cleaning work by South West Water.

From Monday 5 January, a larger number of schemes will begin across the city.

These include long-term road closures on Ashford Road Lane North, Lorrimore Avenue, New Street, Tintagel Crescent and Sundial Square, mainly for wall repairs, gas main replacement and drainage works.

Temporary traffic signals will also be in use at several locations, including Tavistock Road at George Park and Ride, Coypool Road, Colesdown Hill, Wembury Road and Plumer Road.

Some works will operate 24 hours a day, while others are limited to daytime or overnight periods.

Horn Lane will have no exit from Plymstock Broadway car park during weekday daytime hours, with drivers directed to leave via Memory Lane.

Tree works are also planned on North Down Crescent, with phased closures during the daytime.

Drivers are being encouraged to allow extra time for journeys, especially during busy holiday travel days, and to follow signed diversions where road closures are in place.

Residents can check the latest updates and changes to timings through the council’s roadworks information channels, as weather and site conditions may affect schedules over the winter period.
