Three Dartmoor spots named in UK top ten for winter sunrise walks

Three locations on Dartmoor have been named among the UK’s best places for autumn and winter sunrise walks, according to new research looking at early-morning walking conditions during the darker months of the year.

The study, carried out by Canine Cottages, analysed a range of environmental and practical factors to assess how suitable popular outdoor destinations are for sunrise walks, particularly for dog owners.

Research focused on nine well-known UK regions, including Dartmoor, Cornwall, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands.

Postbridge, Tavistock and Princetown all appeared in the national top ten.

This meant Dartmoor featured three times in the final rankings, with no other single region having as many individual locations included.

The analysis combined mapping data with meteorological information from recent autumn and winter seasons.

Factors assessed included the percentage of highly rated dog-friendly walking routes, sky clarity, air crispness, average temperatures and wind conditions during early mornings.

These elements were combined to give each location an overall “sunrise walkability” score.

Postbridge ranked highest of the Dartmoor locations, with researchers pointing to clear skies and dry air conditions that can produce strong light and visibility at sunrise.

Tavistock and Princetown also scored well, reflecting a mix of established walking routes and consistent winter weather conditions.

While the research was aimed at dog owners, the findings also highlight Dartmoor’s wider appeal for winter walking.

The area’s open landscapes, tors and river valleys offer a range of routes that remain accessible throughout the year, even as daylight hours shorten.

Alongside the rankings, canine behaviourist Dr Emma Scales-Theobald commented on the value of maintaining outdoor routines in winter.

“Dogs really thrive on predictability,” she explains. “A steady routine gives them stability, reduces stress, and helps them feel calm and secure from the moment the day begins.

“Even if the weather is less inviting, sticking to regular walks or supplementing them with indoor play or enrichment keeps their minds and bodies engaged.”

The study found that Cornwall dominated the very top of the rankings, with St Ives, Penzance and Newquay taking the first three places overall.

Locations in the Scottish Highlands also featured, reflecting a broader UK trend towards winter walking in scenic rural areas.

However, Dartmoor’s repeated appearance in the top ten suggests the national park offers particularly favourable conditions for sunrise walks during autumn and winter.

Sarah Pring Canine Cottage’s digital marketing manager said: “Autumn and winter can be some of the most rewarding times to get out with your dog, especially at sunrise when the quieter trails and crisp conditions make walks feel really grounding.

“Our research highlights just how much these early routines can support both dogs and their owners. We hope to help people feel confident about creating a morning rhythm that works for them throughout the colder months.”

The findings add to growing interest in year-round use of Dartmoor for recreation and wellbeing, especially during quieter months when visitor numbers are typically lower.
