Barnstaple Christmas light switch-on returns with grotto, choirs and late-night shopping

The event will feature live music, festive activities and late-night shopping in the town centre, with Santa's Grotto open at the Guildhall from 5pm to 8:30pm.
Barnstaple’s Christmas lights will be switched on at 6pm on Thursday, November 26, as the town centre hosts an evening of live entertainment, family activities and late-night shopping.
Barnstaple Town Council is inviting residents and visitors to the event, which will feature food and drink alongside a programme of festive activities across the town centre.
Activities on The Strand will begin from 5pm. Barnstaple Youth House will host its regular youth session from 5:30pm to 8pm, including festive crafts and hot chocolate.
The main stage in The Square, hosted by local radio station The Voice, will showcase performances from local choirs and community groups before the lights are officially switched on at 6pm.
Santa’s Grotto will be open at the Guildhall from 5pm to 8:30pm, giving children the chance to meet Mr and Mrs Claus. Entry costs £2, with all proceeds going to the Mayor’s chosen charities, ChemoHero and Root Cause.
The Mayor of Barnstaple, councillor Loki Dawson, said: “The Christmas Light Switch-On is a valued community event that brings people together and supports our town centre. As we approach Christmas, I encourage residents and visitors to support local businesses and make the most of everything Barnstaple has to offer.”
The High Street and Barnstaple Pannier Market will be open for late-night shopping, with free parking available from 4pm at Belle Meadow, Barnstaple Central, Cattle Market and Tuly Street car parks.
Deputy Town Clerk Jess Foy said the council was working alongside North Devon District Council, community organisations and local businesses to deliver this year’s event.
She said: “We are pleased to be working alongside North Devon District Council, community organisations and local businesses to deliver this year’s event. As the town centre is expected to be particularly busy, we encourage visitors to plan their journeys in advance, be aware of road closures and allow extra time when travelling.”
There will be further late-night shopping evenings on Thursday, December 10, Thursday, December 17, and Tuesday, December 22. Road closures will be in place in the town centre until 8pm on all late-night shopping evenings to support pedestrian safety.
