Be a marshal with North Devon Motor Club
The North Devon Motor Club is proud of the wide range of events it promotes as recent reports in the Gazette would suggest.
The club publicises the competitors and the winners, but there is seldom any mention of the people who make these events happen, more specifically those who are trackside – the marshals.
Their duties may vary depending on the type of event; one day they can be standing in a field witnessing autocross competitors fly past at Sugworthy Circuit; they can be trackside at RMB Chivenor watching racing and rally cars travelling by in excess of 120mph; or, during the autumn and winter months, they may be on the bank of a steep rocky and muddy hill watching cars and bikes try to make it to the top.
Each event has one thing in common and that is marshals are needed for all of them – without marshals, not a single event would run.
In recent years it has become increasingly difficult to get volunteers for events, despite the fact that the task can be very rewarding as our Chief Marshal Coordinator, Jason Irwin, will confirm.
He said: “My role can be a stressful one, especially in the days leading up to an event. However, it is also a very satisfying one - seeing the marshals after any event and hearing how they have enjoyed their day makes it all worthwhile.”
