North and south of county are too different to become one
SIR - With regard to making the whole of Devon a single unitary authority: We in the north of Devon have a completely different way of life from south Devon. We are a widespread community in a rural area not highly populated. Our needs are quite different

SIR - With regard to making the whole of Devon a single unitary authority:We in the north of Devon have a completely different way of life from south Devon. We are a widespread community in a rural area not highly populated. Our needs are quite different from the south of Devon with its high population and industry and large towns with much wealth. We in the north rely on tourism, farming, a tiny proportion of fishing and small individual businesses. Transport is difficult if a car is not available and it is hard for some folk to get to government offices and such like.If we are put together with the rest of Devon we would be like a poor relation, grateful for the scraps the south would throw us; all our local taxes would go to the big towns. As it is, the south gets all the grants and we are ignored. It would cause real hardship to be lumped with the south. We would all be happier to be a separate unit with Barnstaple as the focus. It's only because some Devon County Council and Torridge District Council members have a personal agenda to follow - and blow us peasants!Eve Hobbs,Bideford.
