A new season of creative events at Barnstaple Library includes the innovative ‘Human Library’ idea of ‘borrowing’ a real person from the library.

From April, as part of the new Pride of Place programme of events from Libraries unlimited, Barnstaple will be launching its Human Library scheme.

This is where visitors can ‘borrow’ people with lived experiences and hear their stories in one-to-one conversations designed to challenge prejudice and build understanding.

The Human Library concept was started in Copenhagen, Denmark, by a youth organisation that wanted to create a safe place for conversation to dispel myths and help build bridges.

The new programme of events runs from April to July and is funded by Arts Council England, bringing performances, workshops and community experiences to libraries across Devon.

Other Barnstaple Library events under the Pride of Place banner include a Mini Mosaic Workshop on Saturday, April 18 plus the return of Stories in the Dark from the Crick Crack Club On Monday, April 27.

This is an atmospheric storytelling performance that explores the powerful relationship between words, memory and imagination.

The wider season will also feature a range of additional events at libraries across Devon and Torbay, including creative workshops, performances, talks and family-friendly activities designed to bring communities together.

Many events are free or low-cost, helping ensure libraries remain welcoming community spaces where people can come together to experience arts and culture.

Rae Hoole, creative communities producer at Libraries Unlimited, said: “The spring programme is a perfect example of the huge variety of experiences that can happen in a library space.

“One week you might be enjoying live music or theatre, the next you could be learning a new creative skill or taking part in a conversation that challenges the way you see the world.

“Libraries are places of curiosity and discovery, and we hope people will find something that surprises and inspires them this season.”
