People across North Devon and Torridge will be honouring the fallen at services and events across the region this Remembrance Sunday (November 9).
Almost every community and local church will be holding services and Acts of Remembrance as people gather inside or at war memorials in the towns and villages for the service and two minutes’ silence at 11am.
At the same time as veterans, members of the Royal family, the Government, politicians and foreign dignitaries gather at the Cenotaph in London for the national event, local veterans, their descendants and various civic and military organisations will be making their own observances throughout the region.
In Barnstaple, the town council’s annual Remembrance event sees everyone in the town invited to gather at the war memorial in Rock Park from 10.30am, preceded by a parade.

The Mayor of Barnstaple, Councillor Janet Coates, said: “Remembrance is a time for us all to pause and reflect on the bravery, sacrifice and service of those who came before us and those who continue to serve today.”
Bideford Town Council’s Remembrance Day Service and Parade will see the mayor, councillors, uniformed organisations and the public gather at the war memorial in Victoria Park from 10.45am.
Following this, there will be a short Remembrance Day Service in St Mary’s Church. Various road closures will be in effect between 10.40am and 12.45pm while the parade moves through them.

On Tuesday, November 11 – Armistice Day, when the guns finally fell silent on November 11, 1918 to mark the end of the First World War, the Mayor of Bideford will lay a wreath at 10.40am at the memorial outside St Mary’s Church and mark the two minute silence during a short service.
At the same time, the deputy mayor, will lay a wreath at Victoria Park, where a short service will be conducted. A piper will be present to mark the Last Post/Reveille. A wreath will also be laid at Chudleigh Fort.
The Braunton Royal British Legion Remembrance Parade on Sunday will form up in Caen Street carpark at 9.30am and move off at 10am.
The route will turn right turn onto Caen Street, then left and follow the main road to St Brannocks Church. The salute on the return will be taken by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant and the commanding officer from RMB Chivenor. The parade will return to the Royal British Legion Club in Wrafton for refreshments.
The Chittlehampton Remembrance Sunday service takes place at St Hieritha’s Church from 10.45am to 11.45am this Sunday, November 9.
In Combe Martin, the well-attended Remembrance Parade will set off from the coach park by the Pack O’ Cards at 9.55am and head to the parish church for a service at 10.15am.

Then all gather at the village war memorial for the laying of wreaths and Act of Remembrance, before the parade forms again and makes its way to the Castle Inn.
Holsworthy Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul’s will hold a Eucharist service at 10am, followed by Acts of Remembrance at the town war memorial.
The Holsworthy Remembrance Parade is in the afternoon, with participants forming at the town Square at 2.30pm and making their way to the Methodist Chapel for a Remembrance Service, then on to the war memorial to lay wreaths. All are welcome.
Ilfracombe Royal British Legion is holding its annual and well-attended Remembrance Sunday Parade as normal, meeting at Brookdale Church and coach park at 10.15am, moving off at 10.40am along Wilder Road to the war memorial at Holy Trinity Parish Church.

Following the Act of Remembrance there will be a service inside the church, finishing at around midday. Times may vary slightly.
Northam hosts its Civic Service of Remembrance at 10am at St Margaret’s Church, followed by a procession to the village war memorial and refreshments after at Northam Hall.
Neighbouring Appledore has an afternoon Service of Remembrance with all welcome to meet at the war memorial at 2.45pm followed by the 3pm service at St Mary’s Church and refreshments after in the hall.
The Lynton area has various services and events, with a service at St Martin’s Church in Martinhoe at 9am, Christ Church Parracombe at 10.45am, with villagers asked to gather at the war memorial and in Lynton itself, a 10.45am gathering at the war memorial by St Mary’s Church.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway will hold its annual Service of remembrance on Sunday at Woody Bay Station, starting at 10.45am followed.
A limited train service will operate after the event (based on demand) and 'Axe' will be on display. The West Country Tommies, WWI re-enactors, will be also present.
In South Molton, the Square and Pannier Market have been decorated with poppies crafted by local schools and the community, organised by Sue Morgan of the South Molton Branch of the RBL.
A parade led by the South Molton RBL and local uniformed groups will set off at 10.30am and make its way to the Pannier market for the town Remembrance Service at 10.50am, followed by a gathering in the Coaching Inn after.
In Torrington, the Remembrance Service will start at 10.50am by the war memorial in Great Torrington Cemetery, with a parade leaving Woodland Vale in New Street at 10.40am and making its way there. All are welcome to attend.
