The M5 southbound is currently closed.

The M5 southbound is closed following a serious collision which saw a car crash into the central barrier earlier this morning (Monday, October 27).

Police have said the motorway is closed between junctions 28 and 30, with emergency services on scene following the collision at around 9am.

Traffic watch site Inrix says there is a ‘serious accident from J28 A373 Honiton Road (Cullompton/service area) to J29 A30 Honiton Road (Exeter/Honiton)’.

In a lunchtime update, police said one man has been taken to hospital following what is suspected to have been a medical episode.

Any North Devon drivers wishing to head southbound to Exeter and beyond are advised to delay their journey or find an alternative route.

Update 11.06am: Police report one lane is closed and traffic is slow on the opposite northbound carriageway due to the collision on the other side between J29 and J28

Update 12.28pm: Congestion to J31 (Okehampton turn off) for traffic heading northbound. The eastbound A30 approaching the M5 J31 roundabout is also heavily congested

Update 12.55pm: Police said Highways have closed lane three between junctions 28 to 29 on both carriageways so central reservation repairs can be carried out.

The other lanes are now cleared and traffic should be clearing but there may be some delays in the area.
One man, who suffered a suspected medical episode, has been taken to hospital. The car has been recovered from the scene.
