M5 in Devon hit by major delays after lorry fire

The M5 is currently closed in both directions this morning (Wednesday, October 1) following a lorry fire.

National Highways has confirmed that the motorway is shut between junction 28 at Cullompton and junction 29 for Exeter and Honiton, near Exeter Airport.

National Highways has confirmed that a car transporter carrying electric vehicles has caught fire on the motorway. 

The motorway is closed in both directions between junction 28 at Cullompton and junction 29 for Exeter while Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service deal with the incident.

Devon & Cornwall Police, along with emergency services, are on the scene, being assisted by National Highways traffic officers.

11am - The cause of the fire is not yet known. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the northbound carriageway was being reopened, while the southbound remained closed. Motorists are advised to follow updates from police and National Highways.

10.50am - Devon and Cornwall Police tell Exeter Today: "Our officers have been working with Highways to clear the backlog of traffic. The incident is ongoing."

10.14am - National Highways confirms that the M5 has re-opened northbound but remains closed southbound. Delays of 40 minutes on approach to the closure. 

8.22am - Police confirm to Exeter Today - The M5 is currently closed between Junctions 29 and 28 due to a lorry fire on the motorway near Cullompton. Diversion routes are in place however, the incident has resulted in significant traffic issues, and we advise motorists to avoid the area. Police, the fire service and Highways England remain at the scene and the incident is ongoing.
