A major search was launched last night (Friday, October 17) along the banks of the River Taw in the centre of Barnstaple following reports someone had fallen from the Long Bridge into the river.

Coastguard ground crews, fire fighters, police and ambulance service personnel were all involved as the incident unfolded from around 10pm, while the coastguard search and rescue helicopter combed the river from above.

Thankfully, in an update today (Saturday, October 18), Bideford Coastguard reported the missing casualty was found safe and well away from the river.

In its statement today, Bideford Coastguard said: “Last night Bideford Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked by Falmouth Coastguard, alongside Croyde Coastguard Rescue Team, to assist in a multi-agency search along the River Taw.

“On arrival, the team worked with fire crews from Barnstaple and Braunton to search the riverbanks from Taw Bridge upstream to the iron bridge at the far end of Rock Park.

“With support from Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 387, coastguard rescue officers carried out a line search between Long Bridge and Taw Bridge. Shortly after, Police confirmed the casualty had been located inland — safe and well.

“All SAR assets were then stood down and returned to base, completing a full wash-down of all kit before heading home at around 2.30am.”

“This incident was an excellent opportunity to put JESIP into practice, which is vital when working with multi-agency partners.”
