West Buckland School says it is celebrating ‘another exceptional year’ of GCSE results as almost a third of grades earned were at the highest levels of 8 and 9.
Art, music and computer science achieved a 100% pass rate, while 62% of students achieved grades 9 to 7 in art and 72% achieved a grade 9 in computer science. In physics and geography, 41% of students achieved a grade 9 or 8, as well as 57% achieving a grade A in additional maths.

Standout achievers included three students called Emily and dubbed ‘the three Emilys’ in the Year 11 cohort were awarded an outstanding 17 grade 9s between them, while Carys showcased outstanding academic calibre by achieving 100% 9-8 across all her subjects.

Joseph, Mikey and Ethan impressed with 80% grade 9s. Rafe’s determination and dedication were rewarded with 100% 9 to 7, with Dylan’s hard work and resilience resulting in an impressive 80% 9 to 7.
Students from overseas also came away with outstanding results, with top grades in subjects where English was their second language.
Interim head Helen Lowe said: “I am delighted to see the GCSE results for our students who have exceeded expectations at all levels.
“I am proud to be part of a school where this is the case; it demonstrates the efforts made by students to achieve their very best. I am looking forward to getting to know those students who remain with us post GCSE as they move into the Sixth Form.
“I would like to extend my congratulations to all the Year 11 students and to thank the staff for their hard work and dedication in enabling the students to achieve so well.”
Katie Hill, head of Middle School, added: “Across the years, I have seen our students show insatiable curiosity both within and outside the classroom, constantly seeking to expand their knowledge and understanding. Their resilience has been evident in their ability to overcome challenges and persevere through difficult times.
“In fact, this cohort were in Year 6 when Covid-19 hit - one of the greatest disruptions to education in history. With backgrounds of varying academic experiences, this unprecedented event forged a cohort of determined, resilient and focused students ready to face anything that comes their way.”
West Buckland School is hosting a Whole School Open Day on Saturday, September 20 at 9.30am and the Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday, October 15 at 6.30pm.
