Ilfracombe Academy students have achieved a four year high for A Level results with around a third of all grades at A* or A – the highest percentage in recent history.

The success means a huge 94% of students will be going to their first choice university, an increase from 83% last year.

Individual sixth former successes at the school, which is part of Athena Learning Trust, included James Nevill, who achieved A* grades in chemistry and physics plus an A in maths and he will be studying physics with astrophysics at The University of Warwick.

Zac Harper who achieved A* in physics, plus an A in chemistry and maths and will study mechanical and electrical engineering at The University of Bristol.

Olivia Hopson achieved A* in geography, A in biology and A in photography and will study ecology and conservation at The University of Plymouth.

Joseph Carter achieved three straight As in history, physics and sociology and will study law at Durham University.

Noah McNamara also gained three A grades in history, politics and psychology and will study international relations at King’s College London.

It was three A grades for Samuel Nuth too, in biology, chemistry and maths and he will study medicinal chemistry at Cardiff University.

Ilfracombe Academy headteacher Steve Rogers said: “These are the strongest results we’ve seen in years and we couldn’t be prouder of our students and staff.

“But we’re not stopping here, our ambition is growing and we’re confident that next year will take us even further. With the progress we’re making, Ilfracombe Academy Sixth Form is on track to become one of the highest-performing in Devon.”

Head of sixth form, Nick Beesly, added: “I am absolutely delighted that around one in three of the grades achieved by our students was an A* or A.

“I put this down to the students dreaming big, working hard and believing that they can compete with the best, regardless of background.”

The academy sixth form has seen several new developments this past year, including an upgrade of its independent study room.

This now offers a quiet, modern space that mirrors the learning environments found in top universities. With individual study booths, ample computer access and a calm atmosphere, it has quickly become a valued hub for focused learning.

There is also the support of a dedicated independent study mentor, who helps students manage their time effectively and make the most of their study periods.
