The former Fremington Manor Care Home has gone up for sale with a price tag of £1,750,000.
London-based specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has been instructed to sell the imposing Grade II* listed building after it closed as a care home in May.
Care South, the charity which ran the home, announced in March it would be giving up its lease due to difficulty recruiting enough staff, the home running under capacity and the cost of maintaining and modernising the historic old building.

In its listing, agent Christie & Co says the ‘impressive’ manor house, constructed in red brick with pitched slate roofs behind a parapet wall, has been extended multiple times to offer accommodation across 56 bedrooms, 38 of which have en suite facilities.

These include a purpose-built two-storey extension added in 1996, as well as single-storey additions and a conservatory overlooking the gardens.
Eve-Angelica Apperley at Christie & Co said: “This closed former care home, which was deregistered in May 2025, was recognised as a premium care home within the immediate vicinity.
“The opportunity now exists for a new owner, either locally based or further afield, to acquire the property and re-establish the business or, subject to the necessary planning permission, pursue an alternative use.”

The manor sits in grounds of 5.4 acres and the current building was constructed in the late 19th century and thought to have been remodelled on an earlier manor house first built in the late 17th or early 18th century.
According to the Christie & Co listing, it enjoyed a reputation as a place for the upper classes to play polo and swim, until 1904, when tragedy struck the home when Lady Hilda McNeill and Glyn Pritchard, two members of the gentry, drowned in the River Taw.

During the Second World War, Fremington Manor was used by the US army and it became a care home in 1985.
It had been operated by Care South since 2008. The charity's other home in North Devon – Kenwith Castle – was not affected by the closure.
