The clubhouse at Newton Tracey Cricket Club is to be improved for players and spectators thanks to a North Devon Council grant.

On Monday (June 2) the council’s strategy and resources committee approved the release of Section 106 funds of £8,906.99 towards the cost of refurbishing the pavilion.

The £11,000 project will include widening and refurbishing the entrance and adding bi-fold doors to make the pavilion more accessible and create a viewing area for players and spectators. The remainder of the total will be funded by the club.

‘Section 106’ funding is paid by developers to go towards provision of local facilities after gaining planning permission and the contributions for this project came from the Higher Westaway and Hunters Inn developments in the village.

Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Clayton, said: “I would like to thank Newton Tracey Cricket Club for submitting this proposal.

“It's great to see S106 funding being used to improve facilities and make them more inclusive and welcoming for the local community.”

Ward member for Instow, Councillor Becky Coombs, added: “I was very happy to support the funding being given to Newton Tracey Cricket Club to support them to make the pavilion more accessible.

“The cricket club is a great facility for the community and to be able to open this up to a wider group of people is an asset to all. This is a very good use of Section 106 monies.”

S106 contributions can only be used for certain things and are used mainly for public open space projects.

More information about S106 funding, including how communities can put forward projects, can be found on the North Devon Council S106 public open space funding page.
