A North Devon primary school has been finding out the facts about what happens to their waste and recycling.

On Monday, March 20, one of North Devon Council's recycling crews paid a visit to Lampard Community School.

The visit was prompted by their half term theme - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The crew took their time to explain their job role and gave a demonstration of how the recycling vehicle works.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, March 21 and 22, pupils visited the home of the council's recycling facility, to see what happens to their recycling after it's been collected from their homes.

The five classes were taken on a tour of the facility and saw some of the machinery in action. They also took part in a question and answer session with council officers.

Supervisor for North Devon Council's Waste and Recycling team, Adrian Brookman, said: "This was the first school we welcomed back to our recycling facility since the offset of the Covid-19 pandemic, and what a great group they were! We showed them where each material goes after being collected and what happens to it after it leaves us.

"I'd like to say thank you to John who took one of our recycling vehicles to the school for a demonstration, I've been told he did a wonderful job!

"I'd welcome the school back at any point and would be happy to answer any future questions they have."

School Tutor at Lampard Community School, Jody Davie, said: "Having John bring the recycling vehicle to school enhanced our school topic Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The students got to look closely at the lorry and ask lots of questions as well as experience the sights, sounds and smells of the vehicle! This was the perfect foundation to continue our learning journey at Brynsworthy Recycling Centre.

"The viewing platform allowed the students to watch in amazement as the recycling was moved, separated and sorted. The understanding of what happens to our recycling and why it is important to recycle has been greatly deepened and the students will now strive to reduce, reuse or recycle all that they can in the future."

Lampard Community School is a special school situated in North Devon that caters for children aged 5-16 with complex needs. They are one of ten Devon special schools within the SENtient Co-operative Foundation Trust. The school aim to teach it's pupil's life skills which will lead them to have independent, fulfilling and happy lives.
