THE controversial application for a new Lidl supermarket in Torrington has been turned down by Torridge District Council's planning committee by just one vote.

At a meeting held in Torrington to allow the public to be present, the committee rejected the plan 5-4, against the advice of planning officers to approve the application.

Reasons given were the impact of the building on the amenity of the residents of adjacent properties and the impact of noise on the area.

The application was for a site incorporating New Street car park, Torrington Motors and a strip of disused garden to the rear of New Street.

The plan also included proposals for a replacement car park and a new New Street bus stop and crossing point. It could also have created around 20 jobs.

As owners of the car park, Torridge District Council had agreed to sell the site if permission was granted and stood to gain around 500,000.

Lidl can appeal against the decision.
