An England and Exeter Chiefs rugby star has brought a “buzz” to a North Devon coffee shop after volunteering his time and showcasing his barista skills to support the work of Barnstaple-based Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC.
Ethan Roots’ visit to Nellie’s Coffee Bar in Barnstaple was described as a “huge success,” drawing locals eager to see the rugby star in action.
As they enjoyed coffee, they also learned about Blue Elephant’s impact on young people in North Devon.
The event highlighted the not-for-profit company’s commitment to supporting individuals as they transition from care and prepare for adulthood, independence, and the working world.
Ethan said: “The house was awesome, homely, modern, and top quality. I can see how the quality of life and care for these children is top ten. It was wonderful to see lots of the children coming along tonight and to chat with the many people, including Exeter Chiefs fans, who have come along to this brilliant coffee bar supporting the work of Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC.”
In some positive news, his passion for the cause has led him to return to Barnstaple on 12 March to host ‘An Evening with Ethan’ at Barnstaple Rugby Club, for a special fundraising event in support of Blue Elephant Future Steps CiC.
He will also run a training session for children in care and a select group of aspiring young rugby players, further demonstrating his dedication to making a difference beyond the pitch.
Lucy Squire, Director of Care at Blue Elephant, reflected on the event, saying, “We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Ethan to Nellie’s Coffee Bar. His support means so much to us, and it was fantastic to see him engaging with the community, showing off his barista skills, and bringing attention to the work we do. Ethan’s backing of our fundraising efforts will have a lasting impact on the young people we support.
"Blue Elephant CiC was created to support children who are transitioning from care into adulthood. Currently, there is very little support or funding to help these young people, who have thrived in our homes, into the adult world. Our aim is to help them build essential life and work skills, gain confidence, and transition successfully from care into adulthood while staying connected to our support network, which they know and trust.”
Tickets for ‘An Evening with Ethan’ and the exclusive rugby training session are available at Nellie’s now.
