The Christmas tree on Croyde beach
Parkdean Resorts, owner of Ruda Holiday Park, has returned its ‘Rubbish Christmas Tree’ to Croyde Beach for 2024.
The tree, constructed from discarded tents collected at Ruda, is this year’s ‘Past-Tents’ installation, aiming to highlight the environmental issue of disposable tents.
Each year, over 150 tents are left on Croyde Beach and nearby camping fields.
Some of these tents are repurposed into reusable beach clean bags through a partnership with The Two Minute Foundation, while others are used in local craft projects.
However, a large amount of material still remains.
For 2024, the leftover tent material has been transformed into a Christmas tree, baubles, wreath, and presents, all displayed on Croyde Beach.
This marks the third year of Parkdean’s annual ‘Rubbish Christmas Tree’ display.
Holly Robertson, Head Beach Ranger at Ruda Holiday Park, said: “It’s become a tradition here at Ruda for the Rangers to craft a Christmas tree with an environmental message. This year's theme, ‘Past-Tents’, highlights the over 150 discarded tents we collect every year. By choosing high-quality, reusable tents, or renting instead of buying, we can reduce waste and make a positive impact on the environment.”
Ruda Holiday Park, located within North Devon’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is one of 66 parks owned by Parkdean Resorts.
The team at Ruda works to responsibly manage Croyde Beach and the surrounding area to maintain its appeal for both the local community and the 90,000 holidaymakers who visit each year.
