Exeter Racecourse will welcome thousands of visitors on January 1, 2026 for its much-loved New Year’s Day Raceday, one of Devon’s strongest winter sporting traditions and a fixture that has grown steadily since New Year racing was introduced in the 20th century.
While the wider custom of spending public holidays at sporting events dates back to Victorian times, New Year’s Day racing at Exeter has become a more modern favourite. Over the decades it has developed into a major social occasion, drawing groups of friends, racing fans and families who see it as the ideal way to start the year.
Visitors can look forward to seven competitive jump races, hearty food and drink, free entertainment for children and the easy camaraderie that defines this event. Research continues to show what regular racegoers already know: shared sporting moments release feel-good chemicals, lift wellbeing, and create a strong sense of community. On Haldon Hill, it’s as simple as striking up a conversation with whoever is beside you, the raceday experience does the rest.
General Manager Jack Parkinson said: “New Year’s Day racing at Exeter might be a 20th-century addition, but it feels timeless now. People return year after year because the atmosphere is so warm and so full of optimism. Whether you follow racing closely or just want to start the year doing something fun and memorable, this is the day to do it.”
Long-time racegoer Katie Edwards, who has attended for more than 25 years, added: “There’s nothing quite like it. You see familiar faces, you meet new ones, and everyone’s in great spirits. It’s become a real family tradition for us. Even if the weather’s wild, people are laughing, chatting, and enjoying the day.”
Under-18s go free, and with complimentary entertainment for children, the raceday remains a favourite with everyone who loves starting the new year in style.
Advance booking is recommended, with online tickets offering the best value compared to on-the-gate admission. Free buses are available to and from the racecourse from Exeter St Davids.
