Exeter residents have responded in record numbers to Exeter Foodbank’s Christmas appeal, donating more than 330 selection boxes for young people in care, well above the original target of 250.
The selection boxes will be included in Christmas Hampers distributed by Devon County Council’s Children’s Services, supporting children in care across the county.
Exeter Foodbank described the response as “truly amazing,” highlighting the generosity of the local community.

“We have been amazed at the level of support for this project,” a spokesperson said.
“We asked on Tuesday to see if we could get 250 selection boxes for young people in care, and by the following Monday, we had received 334 boxes! The kindness of people in Exeter is truly inspiring.”
The 84 additional boxes beyond the target will also benefit families who are accessing Exeter Foodbank’s support before Christmas, ensuring more children receive festive treats and a reminder that their community cares.
Exeter Foodbank is also running its wider ‘Christmas In A Bag’ appeal, aiming to collect over 300 bags of festive treats for local families facing financial hardship this year.
The initiative is designed to help ensure children and families can enjoy a joyful holiday despite challenging circumstances.
Local resident, Sophie Barry, who has supported the foodbank in previous years, said: “it’s incredible to see how generous people in Exeter are. Knowing that these hampers will bring a smile to children who might otherwise feel left out at Christmas is really heartwarming.”
Another resident, Mark Patel, added: “The foodbank does so much for families across Exeter. I’m glad to see the community coming together to make sure no child in care feels forgotten this Christmas.”
By supporting the appeal, donors are helping send a message of understanding, support, and community care to those who may feel isolated during the festive season.
The foodbank praised the work of Devon County Council’s Children’s Services team, saying: “We are delighted to work with this team and feel really inspired by the work that they do.”
