The North Devon Motor Club will once again be bringing championship level motor racing back to the area on July 12 and 13, when it hosts two further rounds of the 2025 1st Choice Finishes ASWMC Autocross Championship.
This event has attracted an entry of top off-road drivers from all over the south of England – from Kent to the east and Oxford to the north.
The club had the foresight many years ago to purchase its own land at Sugworthy, High Bickington, with the sole purpose of using it for motorsport.
The competition at this particular event comprises several runs of three or four laps with usually two competitors leaving the line at a time.
It is a non-contact sport, ideal for anybody wanting to learn and improve car control skills, without lacking any of the adrenaline that more publicised motorsport brings!
Many rally drivers begun their careers in this way and some continue to attend events to sharpen their skills.
Each entry is split into several classes to ensure fair competition with others in similar type vehicles – ranging from standard and modified production, specials and rally cars.
The event is governed by the Motorsport Association (MSA UK), who are the Government-endorsed body regulating Motorsport events in the UK. The ASWMC (Association of South-Western Motor Clubs) are the coordinators of the regional championship.
To minimise the running costs, the meetings are no longer open to the general public. However, if you wish to witness the spectacle from close quarters, simply volunteer as a marshal for one or both days – you will be provided with a free lunch, a snack pack and a small contribution towards costs.
New to marshalling? Don’t worry, you will receive training, be accompanied by an experienced marshal and have a premier viewpoint for all the action.
For further information go to the North Devon Motor Club Facebook Page, the club website, www.ndmc.org.uk or contact the Chief Marshal, Jason Irwin on 07444 106691.
