Saxophonist Xhosa Cole, winner of the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year will make a return appearance with his quartet at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver, Appledore this Monday (February 20).

Named Rhythm-a-ting the band will perform the music of the great American pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, adding a contemporary touch with new arrangements and rhythmic interpretations.

Since winning the BBC award in 2018, Xhosa has performed twice at the BBC Proms, composed music for the Flatpack Film Festival, recorded saxophone for Mahalia’s debut album Love and Compromise, completed a 22 date UK tour, released his critically acclaimed debut album K(no)w Them, K(no)w Us and received the Parliamentary Jazz Award for ‘Best Newcomer’ and Jazz FM’s 'Breakthrough act of the year'.

His deep and authentic connection to the lineage of jazz music has helped to establish him among the most exciting young talents in the country.

Appearing with Xhosa will be a star line-up of guitarist Steve Saunders, double bassist Josh Vadiveloo and drummer Nathan England Jones, while interpreting some of the music will be New York based tap dancer Liberty Styles.

The gig starts at 8.30pm and entry is free (though a collection is taken for the band). For a meal booking or information call The Beaver on 01237 474822.
