Victory for the SB Panthers
The SB Panthers – a partnership team made up of Bideford Vixens and Exeter Saracens – secured a dramatic 25–22 victory over Bridges in a fiercely contested Devon Cup Final.
In a match played at high intensity from the first whistle, both sides battled relentlessly, with the Panthers’ defensive resilience and teamwork proving decisive. The game went down to the closing minutes before the Panthers edged ahead to seal a memorable win and lift the trophy.
Bideford players Lily Richter and Jocelyn Cowle contributed tries and flanker Emily Palmer was named Forward of the Match following a dominant performance, carrying strongly throughout and leading the defensive effort. Emily is a real talent and has also recently been selected for the Rugby Academy at Exeter College in partnership with Exeter Chiefs.
The Panthers’ success caps an outstanding season in the newly formed Devon U18 girls’ league, where the side lost just once to finish second and reach the final. The collaboration between Bideford and Exeter Saracens has been widely praised for strengthening opportunities for young female players in the region.
On the same day, the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy visited Bideford RFC, drawing supporters down for photos, followed by a community afternoon tea and quiz.
Sarah-Jane Palmer, Head of Girls’ & Ladies’ Rugby at Bideford RFC, said: “Weekends like this show exactly what women’s and girls’ rugby is all about – commitment, teamwork and enjoyment. To see the U18s lift the Devon Cup was incredibly special and is a reflection of the work being done across the club.
“A huge thank you goes to Matt Saltern, head coach for the Vixens, and all of our coaches who give up their time week in, week out to support the players – their commitment is what makes opportunities like this possible.
“We’re building something really strong here, and it’s fantastic to see so many girls coming through and enjoying their rugby. We’d love to welcome even more players to be part of it.”
Saltern added: “A lot of the girls have come through the age groups at Bideford Rugby Club and that pathway is so important.
“We lost to Bridges away and beat them at home, so we knew the game would be very physical. We managed to win at the end with a terrific try in the corner and huge celebrations for the players.”
