Hole 10 at Tavistock GC
It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.
To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.
We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.
Your challenge this summer is to play them all!
The ultimate 10th hole in Devon golf
#10 – Tavistock Golf Club – Par 3
The 10th at Tavistock is a short but strategic par-3 that marks the beginning of the back nine. While not long in distance, it demands precision and careful club selection, especially given the typical moorland winds and the course’s naturally firm, fast greens.
Despite its modest yardage, the tee shot isn’t simply a wedge in the air and you’re done. Players must consider wind direction and strength, as Tavistock’s elevated setting on Dartmoor’s slopes can influence flight and distance significantly.
The green is generally well-protected and Tavistock’s greens are known for being lightning fast with subtle slopes, meaning anything off-line or off-speed can lead to a tricky two-putt or worse.
Natural hazards like gorse and bracken flank several holes at Tavistock, and while Hole 10’s immediate surrounds are more open than some of the longer holes, errant shots can still find rougher terrain.
This gorgeous little par-3 is all about touch, commitment, and reading the conditions. It’s a classic example of how a shorter hole can nonetheless influence your scorecard, especially if you’re starting the back nine with some momentum riding on your round.
