The ultimate fantasy golf course in Devon moves to the Moors

Building the perfect round of golf using only Devon courses and no course more than once

The magic of Yelverton GC

The magic of Yelverton GC

It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.

To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.

We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.

Your challenge this summer is to play them all!

The ultimate 7th hole in Devon golf

#7 – Yelverton Golf Club – Par 4

A long par 4, typically one of the more demanding holes on the front nine at Yelverton. From the yellow tees it measures around 395 yards (roughly 360–440 yards depending on tee used).

Designed by Herbert Fowler, the hole exemplifies the strategic moorland style found throughout the course. Your tee shot must be well-placed — a large bunker sits prominently on the left side of the fairway, effectively funneling tee shots toward the gorse-lined right side if you miss left.

The first priority on this hole is finding the fairway. Accuracy off the tee makes a significant difference, as missing left can leave you blocked out by gorse or in trouble, and errant shots right may also run into rough or vegetation.

Once in position, the approach is typically to a green that slopes from back to front. Because of this contour, approach shots that are too long or too firm can release past the hole, leaving tricky downhill putts.

Hole 7’s setting offers panoramic views across Dartmoor National Park and towards Cornwall, making it not only a strategic challenge but also one of the more memorable holes on the outward nine.

The 7th at Yelverton is a tough, rewarding par 4 that demands thoughtful tee placement and a measured approach to a sloped green. Well-executed shots here set up a solid scoring opportunity, while missteps can quickly escalate into bogey or worse.

Honourable Mentions

The seventh at Bovey Castle is a legendary par 4 and a hugely challenging hole set among the picturesque valleys and streams of the River Bovey, while the seventh at Warren GC blends links style golf with nature, coastal scenery and strategic shot-making.
