The ultimate fantasy golf course in Devon moves to a tricky par three

Building the perfect round of golf using only Devon courses and no course more than once

It is cold, wet and windy, pretty much the worst time of year to be playing golf, but spring is not too far away and the lush fairways and greens of Devon are awaiting our return.

To get you in the mood, we are taking on the challenge of building the ultimate golf course, but there are strict rules to this game.

We can only use a golf course once and their chosen hole number must correspond to the actual hole on that course. For example, the ultimate opening hole in Devon must also be the opening hole on that chosen course, and then the same course cannot be used again throughout the round.

Your challenge this summer is to play them all!

The ultimate 5th hole in Devon golf

#5 – Saunton Golf Club (East) – Par 3

Our first par-3 on the Ultimate Devon Course is at Saunton East and deceptively tricky despite its modest yardage, just 117 yards from the whites.

From the tee, you must pick the correct club with great precision — going long is the biggest danger. The green is relatively small and protected by hazards and stern rough, so an errant tee shot that finishes behind the green leads to one of the toughest up-and-down positions on the front nine. In contrast, finishing just short of the front edge almost always beats a deeper finish, making club selection and distance control absolutely critical here.

Strategy Tips:

  • Aim for the front portion of the green — it gives a better chance for par or birdie.
  • Avoid going long over the green where recovery becomes extremely difficult.

This hole is often called “Tiddler” due to its short nature but earns respect because mistakes get punished heavily.
