North Devon Ladies 2s
North Devon Ladies’ 2s faced an early start, travelling to take on Sidmouth and Ottery 3s, but it proved a perfect festive send-off for the hockey stars.
Despite the long journey and the brisk morning conditions, they began the match with impressive energy and intent. From the opening whistle, the team established control, pressing high up the pitch and launching a series of early attacks that immediately put the home side under pressure.
Their forward line worked seamlessly, with some excellent linking play creating opportunities in and around the D.
The breakthrough came after just 13 minutes when Regina Lilii found space in front of goal and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Only moments later, Lilii appeared to have doubled the advantage after finishing another well-worked move, but the goal was disallowed, much to the frustration of the travelling side.
Despite this setback, the defence remained disciplined and composed. They absorbed any counterattacks effectively and continued to distribute the ball through the midfield, helping maintain momentum. However, despite sustained pressure, no further goals came before the half-time whistle.
The second half resumed with the same level of determination, and it did not take long for North to extend their lead. Keeley Hathway capitalised on a loose ball in the D and finished confidently to make it 2–0.
Just seven minutes later, Gillian Robbins added a third, reacting quickly during a goalmouth scramble to put the team in what seemed like a comfortable position.
More chances followed as the visitors continued to attack, but fatigue eventually began to show. As legs grew heavy and spaces opened up, Sidmouth and Ottery managed to score two quick goals late in the half, shifting the momentum and creating a tense finish.
Fortunately, the defence regrouped, held firm, and the final whistle confirmed a well-earned 3–2 victory.
Elsewhere, the Men’s 1s lost 2-4 at home to University of Plymouth 1s, while the Men’s 2s were defeated in Dawlish by Teign 1s. The Ladies’ 1s continue their campaign in January.
